Classroom Sharing (100-Word Flash Non-Fiction)

“What did you get for Christmas?”

The teacher was going around the classroom.

It wasn’t yet your turn.

You listened, smiling at what your classmates got, but nothing, you thought, beat what Santa brought you.

The girl next to you shared.

“A bike.”

You clapped, heart racing. Now it was your turn.

“And what did you get?”

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles van,” you said, straightening up.

You felt so proud to share, and so the silence that followed was unexpected. The teacher’s frown spoke volumes, however, so much so that you didn’t look at that toy the same way again.
